My Year In Paintings – 2014

The moment I decided to take a dip into the jacuzzi in David Lloyd during the spring was a pivotal one, for reasons I would not have anticipated. In taking that action, I succeeded in destroying my Apple iPhone 4s, which was in my pocket at the time. On finding out that the 32Gb iPhone 5s was going to cost me over £50 per month on contract, I decided to opt for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. A great move for me. And the key factor was the stylus, which uses technology licensed from Wacom. Basically, the Note 3 is a portable Wacom Cintiq tablet and it’s incredible if you are into doodling. So here is my year in paintings.

Beyond my initial crappy doodles, the moment that I realised that I could actually do something that was worth showing started off with this guy…

Doctor Who

I felt I needed to explore Doctor Who as a subject. I designed a concept for a floating dalek. Stairs no longer an issue!

And of course, every minion has a leader…

Christmas

Another popular subject for doodling about has to be Christmas. It is such a ludicrous concept, so this year’s Christmas e-card features a nod to the corporate side of Christmas.

Xmas Mickey

I started this sketch before Christmas and inked it up today. Nothing beats a grotesque portrait of Santa, enjoying a festive turkey feast!

Christmas Dinner

Back in the late 1990’s, I did this pastel drawing of a dumb blue cat for a Christmas present:

I figured it needed an update…

Mr Jingles

‘Shit Mountain’ was a doodle I did trying to capture the essence of being given frustrating and pointless tasks, and having to work hard to achieve little of worth. A theme I am sure many can relate to.

Super Heroes

As the year wound up, I finally rounded things off with a couple of super hero paintings.

Supergirl

I felt that ‘Supergirl’ was a little flat, so I looked into developing a way of making paintings that jump out a little bit more. Every painting I do, I feel that I am learning new techniques and ‘Wonder Woman’ helps to push those skills a little further.

Looking forward to another year of doodling and painting!
